What happened to good old fashioned, traditional, old school, black and white, no grey shaded villains?

I dont know why, but lately, i just find that every story told, that includes an antagonist must also include a backstory of some traumatic event that is the reason they became said villain, something that can be relatable to the reader, or make the reader sympathetic to them.

i get it can be for the character's arc, or help fully explore the character's life for the readers benefit, and to comment on the fact that monsters are not born, but created through experiences, but i just have been thinking about it more so lately.

Can we no longer just have a glorious, one-sided, 2 dimensional villains out to take down the good guys for no other reason than they don't want good to win? just a badass bastard out to cause badness?
