The book I'm writing is called "Grace Fisk of Caliphee", and my goal is to have it published by the end of the year. It's almost halfway finished (I'm about halfway finished with the eighth chapter). Grace (also my daughter's name) is a bright but otherwise ordinary 12-year old girl from Earth who is assigned an American History project with her friends Melody Ingersoll and Tyrone Warfield, and they have to present a report on John Paul Jones (the father of the American Navy, not the Led Zeppelin bassist, haha). They go to the local public library to do their research, but an abandoned house across the street from the library catches their attention... and in the old house's backyard, there's a treehouse which of course the kids just HAD to investigate.
Grace then discovers an inscription on one of the boards, and when she reads it aloud, she inadvertently opens a rift to another world called Caliphee. The three kids dive head-first into the portal and find themselves in the middle of a forest clearing in a strange land, so they decide to try to find help and see if anyone could help them return home. They eventually stumble across an building that reminds them of a castle, but it's actually something called the Conclave, which is where all of Caliphee's mages reside.
They knock on the entrance door, and are somewhat shocked to see a girl about their age dressed in purplish robes (they aren't like Hogwarts robes, think more traditional wizard robes like in LotR or something). She seems to be able to speak the same language as they do, but they call their language Caliphean rather than English (there is a difference because when Grace tries to read their books, they use a vastly different alphabet!). And the girl that greets them isn't just any mage's apprentice, her name is Anastasia and she's the most gifted student at the Conclave... she's so gifted that Archmage Aloysius (the de facto head of the Conclave) is personally training her!
It doesn't take long for Grace, Melody, and Ty to befriend Anastasia (better known as Ana). She instantly recognizes Grace as the prophesied Chosen One, which of course confuses the mess out of Grace. Ana basically takes them to dinner and shows them their guest rooms for the evening, and the next day they meet the Archmage who explains the whole Prophecy to Grace and that she must stay at the Conclave to learn elemental magic so that she can fulfill the Prophecy by defeating a warlord named Belphegor (which is the name of a demon in Hebrew lore) and end the series of plagues that have inflicted Caliphee.
Grace is of course very skeptical, but she slowly begins to believe not only in magic, but in herself. By the end of the book, the girl once known simply as Grace Fisk of Dubuque is no more - she is Grace Fisk of Caliphee, and with her newfound powers, is set to banish Belphegor from Caliphee for good. By fulfilling the Prophecy, Grace and her friends finally earn their ticket back home, but they get some unique trinkets to take back with them (Grace gets a pendant which allows her to travel back and forth between the two worlds at will, Melody gets an enchanted hairbrush which allows her to tame her chronic bedhead in mere seconds, and I'm still undecided as to what gift Ty will get, but it will be worth is while).
