Frost to fire mage switch

Have made it to 482 ilvl as frost mage barred a non max crafted ring, and missing the recommended trinkets. Stats are where they should be for the most part as far as I can tell and have been running in the m20 range.
I am now interested in learning fire and want to switch but I'm not sure if that would be a detriment or have to restat everything or should I just make a new char?
Any advice or if it's even possible I would much appreciate!
