What exactly affects the mechanics of Triggers?

I have quite a few questions that I have had stuck in my mind since the introduction of Modified Triggers

Mainly, What are the variables that can affect a Trigger's function? Things like does the shape and size of a Trigger affects its properties like weight, durability, sharpness(melee triggers); speed, penetration, yield, aerodynamics(bullets); Trion consumption, etc.

We know that there are modified Triggers used by border agents (Yosuke's Spear, Yuko's Kogetsu Tsuba, Ko's black Kogetsu), but to what extent can Triggers be modified? Would the kind of Trigger play a role in dictating what can or can't be modified? Do Triggers have to be modified out of combat?(that thing Osamu did with his Raygust against Kazama comes to mind)

Like could one theoretically request a Kogetsu that is much larger or smaller than the baseline mode (Odachis, Tachis, Wakizashis, Nagamaki) or even a kogetsu that is based more on other types of swords (Zweihanders, Claymores, Bastard Swords, Sabers, Rapiers); maybe a Raygust that instead of being a tower shield it is a round shield, heater shield, or even a kite shield.
