President Minshahe Bapamo has announced that Kikwit will cease to be the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the 1st of September. By then, the restoration of the Palais du Peuple (Parliament) and the Palais de la Nation (Residence of the President) should be complete. At the start of 2038, all ministries should have completely left Kikwit and returned to offices in Kinshasa.
While Gombe, Kinshasa, the political heart of the city, will stay much the same in structure, the government has taken the opportunity of a mostly desolate city centre to rebuild the city anew with future-proof plans to prevent congestion when the city resumes to be busy. The planning should be practical, yet feel natural and native in essence. The city needs a new stadium and new palaces of learning, as well as new campus for the University of Kinshasa.
While the Congo has received some German offers, the government has opened the floodgates for reconstruction plans of downtown Kinshasa, from both individuals and the private sector.
