Following a political crisis which saw the elected President Desiré Kasa-Saso deposed for allegedly committing treason, Lieutenant-General of the Gendarmerie Weyaya and General Koniabuna of the Congolese National Defence Force saw to hosting new elections and finding a new legitimate President as neither of them wanted to fight over the succession.

Due to the short window of opportunity for the elections, criticised by some watchdogs as being intentionally small to prevent parties from properly campaigning, the political picture is much the same as during the last elections, with the addition of the political crisis. What this meant is a significant increase in the popularity of candidate Minshahe Bapamo and the Congolese Neo-Nkrumaist-Sankarist Union (UNSC) and plummeting rates for Kasa-Saso's candidate Matama Vese of the National General Union of Africa (UNGA). As a third candidate stands Maurice Mbadinga from the New People's Party (NPP), but since he was out of the picture it seems that the electorate gives him a slim chance at victory.
