Extracting iron ore from a blood ocean?

One of my settings has an ocean that is made of blood instead of salt water, with clot-atols inhabited by eusocial hive-bats and leeches the size of whales. The mainland is a more normal ecosystem, with a medieval-ish tech level.
My question is, is there any practical way to extract iron from this blood? Would it ever be easier than mined ore? I can always make something up, but anything real?
