Setting is a bit semi-hard science fiction that has its roots in Star Wars - I generally try to stick to reality-based physics as best I can, but will readily discard some details in favour of flavour or Rule of Cool if I like it better that way.
So. Our current concern is a planet with significant orbital infrastructure, and we're looking at a matched pair of spaceport and space elevator. The orbital tether of the space elevator leads straight into a mass cargo handling facility, and the elevator is the best channel for sheer volume of cargo.
Also relevant is a spaceport that accommodates smaller spacegoing ships and surface-to-orbit shuttles, for when people don't want to wait for the next scheduled lift up or down. I haven't yet decided how to further flesh out this particular spaceport yet. It does mean regular flights by shuttles, with the occasional larger ship coming in or out. This shuttleport is very near the beanstalk.
The question now is: Is it wise to combine the two facilities into one giant spaceport, or should I separate the shuttleport from the elevator's groundside tether? I can think of a few arguments for either, but I'd like further input before I commit to one side.
