The seven city-states of the Dwarven League.
The Dwarves are among the oldest and most storied races of Thessos. There are many who claim they invented writing although that isn't true, they simply have the oldest remaining written records. They do also seem to have the greatest love for the written word. The Great Library of Magra is accounted among the wonders of the world.
The League consists of the seven city-states, banded together for defense against the encroaching Empire of Enthros. The League is only a few generations old, where previously the city-states shifted back and forth, usually led by Mekonos and Akos. There have been three wars with Enthros (large peninsula to the east), the second of which resulted in the conquest of three city-states on the mainland and the incorporation of a certain number of Dwarves into the Empire, and refugees into the other cities.
The city-states have various forms of government between them.
Mekonos: Military Dictatorship
Idrissis: Hereditary Monarchy
Scidros: Theocracy
Akos: Republic
Vonos: Kritocracy
Magra: Elected Monarchy
Aphys: Elected Diarchy
All except Mekonos have some democratic part of their system, such as an Assembly.
The Dwarves are excellent sailors, many say the best. Their strength makes them excellent rowers, and their size allows for more rowers. Their islands span the only access by waterway to the Inner Sea, making them well-positioned for trade.
The islands are tropical, with distinct wet/dry seasons, but they are also mountainous with cooler climates higher up.
They have many mineral resources on their islands, as well as hardwoods. They are also well-sought after for their bronze workmanship, and skill as mercenaries.
