Okay, so I was looking for a specific term, because I was sure it existed, that would help me to figure out what to call areas in my many different stories. I finally found it and it was not easy.
I mean obviously no one goes around saying, "what administrative division do you live in?" They just use the actual names of the divisions but I'm basically looking for a big list of names.
Wikia gave me this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_division
But, I would like more. Like country specific words for districts in English or the native tongue. Searching online has basically only given me countries and their provinces/districts. Basically the English approximate word of a countries' divisions. Language dictionaries have been... unhelpful.
The only way I can explain this is like associating the word prefecture with Japan. Other countries use the word but I associate it specifically with Japan because I'd never heard that word used for an area before taking a course that included japanese history.
The same goes for shire and England.
Does anyone know of other unknown/less-used words for administrative divisions?
I've searched the sub but couldn't really find anything specifically about this. I'd be happy to know if there is one. I'd love to find divisions with cultural significance but anything is appreciated. I feel like this could be a great tool for anyone who finds this later.
Edit: Fictional Administrative Divisions can certainly be included in this. One in particular sticks out to me.
Holds from Skyrim. I looked around to be sure and I'm fairly certain they just shortened the word Stronghold to "Hold" for a jarl's area of rule. I wouldn't call the people in charge of holds jarls but I really like Hold as a division. (Apparently, Hold is a real administrative district but the idea remains the same)
I feel like not a lot of people use the world "Realm" anymore. The last time I saw it was re-reading Book of a Thousand Days. I suppose it's pretty cliched for fantasy stories but i like it.
