I'm looking for some ideas of recording moving footage that aren't (a) a magical crystal ball or (b) a camcorder by another name. My world is, as far as I can tell, somewhere between 1840 and 1900 techwise with a few high-tech reverse-engineered or ancient-astronaut artifacts; still cameras are some form of daguerrotype or heliotype, so just throwing a film camera in would be out of place. Magic in my world is geared toward technology and practical use and often uses "greasy little gearcases" and the like to function, so mystical, ethereal crystals would be out of place as well. If I thought I could squeeze in real-world tech that would match everything else I would, but that doesn't seem to be an option, and I don't want to call it a "wondrous magical Picture Scroll" or some nonsense like that. Also, it should be on the level that a camera was in the late 1800s, a very expensive bit of kit that everybody doesn't just have lying around. Any ideas?
*sorry for no flair, I'm on my phone.
