Due to the ongoing fronts on both the northern and southern borders of the Kingdom of Velsarrad, I'd suggest watching the gif twice, once following the northern conflict, once following the southern.
Each frame represents twenty days.
This was inspired by this post by /u/ProfPepitoz, but also by Youtuber EmperorTigerstar.
Please offer your honest criticism over the gif. I'm prepared to make any changes suggested and upload new versions to this post.
Here's an in depth explanation of what happened (not really necessary, but good supplementary for those interested):
Velsarrad is a incredibly nationalistic and arrogant kingdom. The region is a geopolitical nightmare, and Velsarrad's stability is a very big cause of jealousy around the greater region.
Neighbouring countries have been trying constantly to conspire against Velsarrad, but due to such a strong national, cultural, and ethnic identity, it's been impossible for other nations to slip in spies, they always get picked out. Velsarran diplomats are rigorously trained, and thus always perform phenomenally well at international meetings, always slipping attention away from Velsarrad and onto other countries.
Velsarrad decides to begin a military campaign against Madna in the northwest to win money and 'lebensraum'. Madna is an impoverished, backward, and dysfunctional state, so it is assumed that Madna will topple easily.
Brethnar (northeast), Dronoth (across the lake), and Veranor (northwest of Madna) begin offering Madna money, arms, and soldiers to fight against Velsarrad. All of which are disguised as Madnal.
Velsarrad is baffled by the fighting capacity of Madna, and cries of conspiracy fly around in international diplomacy
Brethnar and Nuremar join the fight against Velsarrad. Initial panic at being vastly outnumbered leads Velsarran command to make impulsive and poor decisions. As a result, despite having a rigorously trained and equipped army, Velsarrad suffers constant losses
A well known Velsarran politician, Dheolos, is exiled from the Kingdom after he is blamed for the country's diplomatic collapse. He heads north into enemy occupied territory, and riles up his people, who declare independence under his leadership. He spreads in popularity in the north quickly, as many towns and hamlets join his upstart sovereignty. Unfortunately, they are unable to consolidate and nation-build quickly enough, so it collapses.
The Throne shuffles the military leadership, military command improves. The tables turn, and the invading nations are pushed back. It is assumed that Velsarrad will win. Velsarrad is also blessed by a very violent civilian base. The army is constantly boosted by civilian efforts both on the front lines and as non fighting aid. Many towns also stage coups against occupying garrisons and liberate themselves, but are soon crushed by patrolling brigades.
The Nuremese Fourth Brigade defects and marches on Nithar, the Nuremese capital. Because the Nuremese army is stretched so thinly, Nuremar cannot assign the military power to resist the rebels, instead keeping all their soldiers on the Velsarran front. The Nuremese capital falls, and the rebels occupy the city. However, Nuremar continues the war effort against Velsarrad. (the northern cantons of Nuremar were once under Velsarran rule, and due to Velsarrad's significantly higher quality of life, many people from the region, including most of the soldiers from the Fourth Brigade, are incredibly pro-Velsarran)
Nuremar seems willing to withdraw and sign peace, after a while, so do Brethnar and Madna.
Dronoth, an industrial superpower joins the war effort against Velsarrad. Again, military leadership goes into turmoil. Roughly half of all mobilised fighters are taken from the northern and southern fronts to fight Dronoth.
The fronts collapse, leading to a rapid wave of invasion.
The mountainous southeast is surrounded by Nuremar, and loses contact with high command. After a month of this, they declare independence, and hurriedly make peace with Nuremar, declaring neutrality in the war.
Sieged on all sides, the aristocratic and lazy capital has no ability to fight. Though many citizens have come from all around the country to take one last stand, it is impossible to stock everyone with food, ammunition, and other supplies, and as a result, the capital cannot put up much of a fight.
