Should I read classic fantasy books if I never did or shouldn’t to not unconsciously copy them?

Post Body

I’m trying to get into reading books, I’m interested in what considered “classics” or just popular series, like Lord of the Rings (Didn’t watch the movies too, all I know is from the memes, yes, about the leg too), Harry Potter (watched movies as a kid, so I don’t remember much), Witcher (only really played 3rd video game and watched first season of the show), GoT (Never watched the show, memes again). I’m afraid that I will most certainly like those books and subconsciously copy their elements into my world. I am especially afraid of Tolkien’s influence, I heard he’s done brilliant job in world building his world. Are my fears unjustified?

  • Occult literature from the 17th and 18th century

All the best fantasy is HEAVILY inspired by real world ideas. By deepening the pool to draw on you're going to automatically improve the end result quite a bit.
