My world may have been ravaged by World War 3, humanity may have been reduced to less than 100 million people, the survivors may have had to fight tooth and nail just to survive day to day, and governments may have developed super soldiers with unfathomably powerful super powers…
…but after 500 years, humanity still loves silly cat videos and social media.
There's honestly so much because I've been going through a fair bit of effort of trying to make something that is both recognizably sci-fi while not blindly taking on assumptions from other settings trying to evoke a far more blue collar tone
- People still grill & camp. In fact it's become something of a widespread past time to traipse out into the wilderness of a hab or early stage settled planet and spend a couple months building things up from first principles before returning to civilization. These throwback settlements are then either left to gradually decay or inhabited by the next round.
- Malls are very much a thing, albeit heavily leaning on the food & entertainment angle with a secondary focus on various services and unique goods. The first two tiers on Maslow's Hierachy are very much guaranteed but people want to have experiences beyond that. Extending from that
- Handmade clothes. Clothiers are quite popular in fact, with small scale brands from a certain city being highly esteemed for their quality, uniqueness and minor human flaws.
- Use chemical propellants in various applications. It just works.
