Are they an entire species? Are they just a handful of people? Do they rule the world or do they hide away from it?
In the setting Iโm working on, there are only a dozen true immortals at present. They are all super wealthy either from their own efforts or because they were supported by the other immortals. They also work from the shadows, never being the faces of organizations or governments.
The immortals have split into two groups of 6, one that is philanthropic and one that is selfish. Both support other immortals because they see them as kin. Both groups have formed mega corporations from behind the scenes.
The philanthropic group uses their wealth and mega corporation to try and better the world. Even going so far as to fund the building of space towers and eventually an orbital ring.
The selfish group uses their wealth and mega corporation for their own enjoyment. They even set up their own corporate dystopia country where they can more or less do what they want. Though they also see the merit in advancing technology as it adds things for them to do.
Then there are immortals that can be killed, they just wonโt die from age or disease. Two of the most noticeable ones openly rule their countries.
Truly IMMORTAL people are rare. The technology is sorta well-understood but difficult to implement since you gotta start from scratch and implement hundreds of additional nanite clades and bionics into the being. They're semi-public knowledge though the vastness of the human sphere and the times between them getting active makes them somewhat mythological.
They're not in charge as such. They're designed not to want that. Instead they're closer to a mix between advisory board and biological & memetic weapon designed to ensure things don't deteriorate past a certain point. Maybe the post-human cult is getting a little handsy with worlds designated as baseline reserves. Maybe someone else IS trying to turn things into a dictatorship. That's the sort of thing they're called upon to correct, before going back to living like cavemen on their own worlds or opting to be the local oracle somewhere.
They're quite good at what they do, but they gotta be told to do it or they'll just traipse about taking in the sights for the next few centuries. So far, it's worked out well for everyone.
