In order to use magic in your world, do you need magic in your blood? Or is it something that anybody could pick up? Do you have to make a trade with a patron? Does your world have non magical beings born to otherwise magical families? Can the opposite happen? Are there special โbreedsโ of magic bloodlines?
Etc etc.
Male casters gain it through inheritance. Female ones get chosen by the Earth Mother. Witches tend to build up a portfolio of different minor contracts and nuances that makes each selection of spells and skills highly unique.
Though there's also Willworking which covers things such as counter magic and forcing luck & physics into a given direction. Lets you do things like making bullets or blades stop at your skin or perfectly land intact after falling from 6 stories up which anyone can learn. Mostly involves learning how alter your own perception so reality just goes with your version of events since it seems just so convincing.
