Hello everyone! This is my post in this page, so please let me know if I'm supposed to be doing something I'm not. Basically I'm in the process of planning a novel I've been cooking for a while, and long story short, it's a merge of steampunk and fantasy, and recently I decided to tackle the magic system in my world building process. I wanted it to be something weird and almost alien, that's difficult to access unless you are born with it and or have extensive training. I think I got kinda lost in the creative flow and I got to this dream/nightmare type of magic system, and I looked at what I had so far and I was like "hmm... This doesn't really fit with the whole 19th century Victorian England vibe I was going for..." So my question is, do you think the magic system needs to converse with the setting and the world as a whole, or is it not that necessary sometimes?
