What are some things in your world that were inspired by real events?

One of the main plot points in my world is that a parasitic alien species is ravaging the galaxy after coming into contact with species that couldn't deal with them, this happened because of interplanetary traveling, which was inspired by how global trades contributed to the spread of the Bubonic Plague and how native americans were exposed to diseases because of colonizers. So what are your examples?
