Personal questions at work
Post Body

Iā€™ve worked at a few places now where the following situations have happened:

1) first day of work at a new job, my new manager (a woman) asked me how old I was and whether or not I had children (Iā€™m also a woman). I found those questions very intrusive and awkward but since I was new didnā€™t want to push back. I donā€™t really ask about the ages or family situations of people I donā€™t know well - itā€™s information that will usually come up on its own only if our relationship deepens and gets closer, and at work often it does not. I donā€™t really want people at work that Iā€™m not particularly close to beyond a cordial professional relationship to know personal details about me.

2) at another job Iā€™ve already been there for several months. My manager asked me how old I was. I found the question kind of intrusive and told her the age decade I was without specifying my exact age. She then said ā€œwhat, you donā€™t want to tell me your age??????ā€

I donā€™t know if Iā€™m overreacting, but is this acceptable in a professional setting? I personally feel like those are unprofessional questions to ask in the workplace as theyā€™re about private life & not at all relevant to the job but I wanted to hear other peopleā€™s opinions
