Quick question for the guys who know more than me.

I started wood working a year ago. I started with small projects and have been progressively building bigger things. I was going to build myself a night stand.
When it comes to a drawer how do you know what size to build it? Do you just take the size of the opening and subtract 3/4 of an inch from each side? What about the depth of the drawer?
