I want to start making puzzle boxes but have zero experience. What tools and resources do I need to start?

Thinking small 2-3 step puzzle boxes at first. Want to practice until I get good and then use for gifts/hobby. Any ideas? Obviously since I'm a beginner I don't want to spend a crazy amount, but I'm willing to build a collection of tools if I grow to like it.
