Advice on edge-joining Hickory boards for furniture

Post Body

I'm starting a project (picture attached) for some friends for the entryway to their house. It'll be made out of Hickory, and I have several questions, but first's first: Any advice on edge-joining hardwood? I've made several furniture pieces in the past, and I typically plane, joint, and then edge-join with glue and dowels placed every 6 inches. But, that's for record player stands. This is mainly an enclosure (albeit 7-feet tall). Is edge-gluing enough? Or should I dowel as well? Or is there a different, sturdier way to edge join??

Future posts will be on style for the bench ;)
