Any type of penetrating oil, apply it yearly. No such thing maintenance free for exterior wood.

Avoid any type of film forming finish. Spar varnish is even more maintenance than penetrating oils. Those nice yatchs with all the varnished woodwork require a crazy amount of regular professional maintenance.
