Suggestions for a reliable long straight edge?

I’m looking for suggestions on how to buy or make a reliable long straight edge, preferably 6-7 feet long.
I bought a 6 foot aluminum ruler at the hardware store and it’s ok, but it’s not giving me great results as I check the jointed edges on my boards (I’m hand-planing the joints for an 80” table).
Would a 6 foot level be straighter than an aluminum ruler?
