Adding a wood stove to a finished basement

Post Body

I have a finished basement with an old boiler room that only contains an electric water heater and an unused chimney that used to be for the oil boiler. Does it make sense to get a wood stove that I place outside the boiler room, but run the exhaust pipe through the wall to tie into the existing chimney? Will it heat up my 600 sqft basement properly as well as send some residual heat up stairs?
