Hey folks:

We live in a Rambler (ranch style house/Virginia) with one chimney/two flues. We converted the fireplace on the main level to a gas insert because of convenience but didn't do anything to the basement fireplace.

My questions are:

  1. with one chimney and two separate flues; can we have one gas insert venting out one flue and the woodstove to vent out the other flue? Assuming we vent the woodstove exhaust pipe higher than the gas insert fireplace chimney cap.
  2. is it possible (or advisable/sensible) to have a woodstove IN a fireplace like this? (picture attached) We don't want it jutting out because of....aesthetics.

Edit: Yes, we are keen on a woodstove and not a wood insert.

thank you all in advance!
