don’t know where to start

i want to stain it darker but no matter how much i sand, the original color stays! this is very overwhelming. idk what to do i need help. im getting very frustrated and im crying.when i wipe the dust the color is the same. im thinking about giving up! i don’t know what steps to take to make this happen all i want is a darker color. i even bought a sander but i hate it!
