I felt shame when I joined women's subreddits and just discovered how different things are

It's just how they can go to doctors to check things, how they have products that help them.

I'm 21 yo and last week for the first I knew that there are different things for period like tampons, I use low quality pads that doesn't help, even my mom said she has the same problems (blood spots no matter what), how I was raised to feel very shamefully about it, can't go to mosques, can't hold Koran..etc. I also discovered that I don't need to stay 3 days on bed every months because of how painful my period cramps are, all I need is some medicines to help me (a girl on reddit told me).

My period is a mess sometimes it last 3 days longer than usual, sometimes I don't get it for 2 months or 3, I told my mom several time to let me visit doctor but it's something unusual and it's shameful to talk about things like this, so she ignored me.

I don't know nothing about my own body, I got FGM surgery when I was young (it's common for women to reduce their sexual desires) and I read an article about it's complication, and it made me think of visiting doctors to just check if I'm OK.

Oh and I spent years feeling shameful, guilty and disgust, when I have lustful thoughts, I even checked how to masturbate and it went disaster as all I felt was shame and nothing, but at least I no longer feel that shame about my period or my body as I lost my faith years ago (closeted non believer).

Has anyone went through this? I need advice on how to learn female body.

Sorry english isn't my first language.

Hey! A lot of people learn late and it sounds like you’re trying your best for the situation. You might try pads with wings, those are helpful. Tampons are also helpful but if you’ve never used one it can be hard to navigate at first. I personally enjoy using a period cup. It’s silicone and goes in your vagina to catch blood. You can wear a pad underneath. You do need to reach inside yourself to get it. I prefer this option because it’s reusable and I get less period symptoms than with tampons. Also to clean you just need to boil it between cycles or at night if you’re not wearing it. Shame is a hard thing to shake, but keep trying. There will be good and bad days. Masturbation is worth it, and healthy (coming from a late bloomer). It takes time to learn your body and it can be frustrating to figure out, but it’s an empowering act. Sexual thoughts are NORMAL! Figure out what you like and lean in, it will help you. Also maybe opt for a vibrator if you can. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with all of this big hugs I encourage you to find perhaps a support system that sees you as a full person, and not another woman to hate. You go girl! Oh and birth control would likely help regulate your periods. I really liked Nexplanon (it’s an arm implant) it lasts 3 years and I personally never got a period during that time. Everyone is different though.
