My mother has never allowed me to use tampons for a number of reasons, one of them being toxic shock syndrome or something like that, but I was accidentally given them in one of my store orders. I don’t just wanna throw them out and it be a complete waste.
Are they actually safe to use. I know hundreds of people who use tampons and aren’t dead, so I’m just wondering. I don’t really know how to use them…
Back in the 80s we were all scared of TSS from the scary inserts in the tampon boxes. With no internet to verify anything, the only thing we had were stories of things our cousin heard.
Your mom probably never looked into it further than that.
No. We all read the inserts multiple times. There were no phones to play on while you were going to the bathroom. You had to read something.
The inserts were scary. That's my whole point

Teenage me was not going to ask any adult about it. I relied more on peers to get information, even though that's obviously wrong.
I still wore tampons though! My mom told me not to worry, but she never explained why.
