So I've been following this subreddit for a couple years now. Two years ago I started looking at WLS very seriously when my wife completed a RNY. I was initially not supportive of her, and I changed my tune after some soul searching.
After some insurance misinformation (told it was a covered benefit after 8 months pre-op stuff went in and submitted found out it wasn't) a job change I had insurance to submit again, and I did. I was approved with some minor conditions. I discussed it with my wife and she went off. She didn't think I earned the right to have WLS because I hadn't tried to loose weight as hard as she had. I was hurt I was floored. In her defense, when I started a bariatric diet (including doing a near liquid diet when she was doing it) I lost like 80lbs. By this point (a year and 1/2 into the process) I was starting to gain weight again. Ultimately, I didn't go through with the procedure. I started eating like had in the past. I started drinking more. I'm probably a bit depressed along with having some anxiety issues. I did start going to the gym with my wife, and I do feel like she's supportive of my struggle.
Two years ago today, I went in for my first appointment / consult for WLS. I'm 5lbs. away from where I was at that appointment. Other than quitting smoking, I lost two years on my weight loss struggle. My joints ache more. My back hurts. My doctor put me back on a watch list for weight.
I may not be as big as some of you considering this change (315lbs and 5 11), but if you feel this is the right decision for you, I implore you to do what your heart tells you to do.
