Game saves backup

I've let the game sit for quite some time, so much so that when I tried it last night I was lost. I think the only solution is to make a fresh start. If I locate my gamesaves and copy/cut/paste that into another location will I be able to restore it at another time? I tried deleting the folder after copying it and when I loaded the game up it still had my 'continue' option oddly.
