2 Noob Questions regarding Witcher 3

Hello guys, sorry for the 2 noob questions. This is my first witcher game and I am loving it so far.

Q1. What is the difference between my 2 swords? I heard that one sword is more effective against monsters and one against humans? Think I missed this in the tutorial.

Q2. How do I effectively use the "trap" spell? Everytime I put it down it doesnt seem to do anything? I thought its meant to "trap" the enemies and make them stop for a few seconds? Do I put it down and wait for enemies to come inside the circle?
