Is it odd to feel disturbed when people celebrate Ciri’s relationship with Mistle?

Post Body

Allow me to further explain the context behind this question. My first introduction to the Witcher series was through “Witcher 3”. From there, Ciri became one of my most favorite characters amongst a few others. One thing I can remember is always feeling bad about how she was frequently on the run in the story. Imagine my surprise when I heard that she goes through much worse in the book series.

I gave the books a read and found myself particularly disturbed by the relationship between Ciri and Mistle that was a result of sexual assault (as explained in the book). There are numerous points to go on about how it was not seen as a positive thing.

  1. Ciri going to the river afterwards crying and desperately trying to wash herself.

  2. Geralt having a vision of Ciri with Mistle and immediately frowning as he knew something was very wrong.

  3. Ciri not wanting Mistle to touch her anymore and admitting the only reason she stays with her is because she doesn’t want to be left alone.

Basically the relationship was a case of Stockholm Syndrome, which by definition ‘describes the psychological condition of a victim who identifies with and empathizes with their captor or abuser and their goal.’

All in all, the relationship in no way should be celebrated and yet I often times find so many people explaining with glee how Ciri was in a relationship with this woman, and how they even got matching tattoos while getting intoxicated by Fisstech (drugs). Often times, I can’t help but find this completely disturbing that such a relationship would be viewed in a positive light.

And even worse of the option in the Witcher 3 game where you can choose to have Ciri talk about the rose tattoo on her thigh in a positive light. I do know for certain I make sure to choose the opposite option of having Ciri admit she was simply young and dumb, and that it was not right to be involved in such things.

All in all, I do wonder if anyone else feels disturbed when seeing people talk about the Ciri/Mistlle relationship with pride or on a positive note.

As a queer woman, I love to see representation in fiction but Ciri/Mistle was NOT a the way to do it. Sexual abuse is abuse no matter what gender the perpetrator and the victim are. I feel just as disturbed as you do. 🤢

It reinforces very real and dangerous stereotypes that queer people are sexual predators. Queer people are already so unsafe in our current political climate. If there was already a wide range of representation available in media, sure we would need some bad guys. But a rapist queer woman when we literally have religious fanatics protesting in the streets calling queer and trans folk pedophiles!? Absolutely fucking not.
