This guy wasn't too bright. Drowning in a lake instead of say the Wiconsin river where a body may end up hundreds of miles downstream.
Using his home computer to do the searches. Not getting rid of the "lost" passport. Not buying the airline card with cash.
So many mistakes.

They may have, but a lake is easy to search and can typically be done in less than a week. If no body is found then they start trying to figure out where he is. If it's a river I would think that it take longer for them to decide something was amiss, and I don't think it would be out of bounds for a body to never be found vs a lake.
