A few years ago, my friends and I had a whale of a time circling the state of Colorado, and two years ago we did a similar tour of our home state, Minnesota. In both cases, we were fortunate enough to find a wide assortment of interesting people, places and things. Both trips were one unexpected adventure and pleasant surprise after another. They were such successes that we're turning our sights to our easterly neighbor state for a circle tour there.
As occasional/frequent visitors to Wisconsin, we know what we know, mostly the better known attractions. We have a list so far of favorite places as well as spots we've always wanted to visit but haven't had a chance yet. Besides these knowns, however, the upper Midwest frequently surprises with things we happen upon or are directed to from time to time. I'm writing to ask what YOU all can share in the way of your favorite out-of-the-way places and things.
What are the things you've seen and the places you've been that are lesser known...or even essentially unknown? Out of the way and off the beaten path? Hidden gems, seedy dives, cultural and historical treasures, scenic vistas, redneck roadhouses, greasy spoons, places where a guy could get in trouble? The underbelly of Wisconsin, seedy and otherwise? Have you ever discovered something and couldn't believe your find?! Tell me about it.
If it helps, our group is pretty universal with our interests, but especially outdoors/hiking, history, live music, and food, both fine and divey.
Thank you in advance for everything and anything you can clue us in on!
