Season 1 episode 12: Miss Magix: Controversial or Not?
Post Body

Here goes…

[Background]

I remember finding Winx back in 2014 and eventually finding an app on Android that linked up with some sort of youtube channel that played them all up to s6. I remember seeing the above-mentioned episode (S1-E12: Miss Magix) during my binge watch. knowing nothing of the various dubsor the movies, I thought I was getting the whole show as intended… nope! It was the 4Kids dub.

Well years later when introducing it to my fiancee, I thought I hallucinated the entire “Miss Magix” episode or that it was part of the4Kids dub. Because I explained everything to my fiancee and when that episode never showed, I was made to look like a fool!

Title: Miss Magix

Show: Winx Club

Time in Question: 11:38-11:43

Description: Stella skips a major test to prepare for the Miss Magix competition. While at the competition, a dark-skinned woman begins crying as normally their hair is straight but, they were “just walking down the hall when all of a sudden POOF! her whole head of hair puffed up, just like that” and when Bloom reaches out to touch this person’s hair they overlay a boing sound.

[My thoughts]

Personally I’m of the opinion that while it’s a big “OOF!” Moment for the team, it doesn’t deserve as much hate as it gets as 1) it’s a product of its time, 2) parents should be having age-appropriate discussions with their kids about how stereotypes are not ok and can hurt other people’s’ feelings. and 3) I know several light-skinned people who’s hair goes “POOF! Just like that…” especially after showering and so it goes to show that even in the realm of Magix, we all have some of the same problems. In short, it’s more nuanced than the very simple case of “thing bad!” And I think it can be a teachable moment. I also think that if we (as individuals, groups, or societies) cover up this kind of thing rather than learning from our mistakes and acknowledging them; we are liable to repeat those mistakes or worse.

[The Question]

What do you think? Does this episode deserve as much hate as it gets? Do you know any of the history surrounding this one? Could it have been made better? I Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
