My apologies if this has been belabored before.
I have Razer Megalodon 7.1 headphones, they're USB, will only interface directly with a PC/Mac AFAIK, the surround works with everything, and I love 'em. They'll play anything the PC feeds them in proper surround, DVD movies, non-licensed stuff, games that weren't programmed to use any special Dolby encoding, Doom 3, anything. They also show me how many channels the audio source is in when it's sent to them, so I can verify if it's really surround.
My Wii U is currently connected to my screen directly via HDMI, and I use a stereo cable to connect the audio out from the gamepad into the PC, and I tell the PC to passthrough the audio that comes in from that stereo cable to the headphones, and it's just plain stereo whether I set the Wii U output to surround or not. I accept that's a limitation of this setup.
I wanted to ask, does anyone know of a way that's guaranteed to work to get the surround sound audio the Wii U should be able to output and get it to the headphones? I imagine this would be something like an HDMI input card in my PC, and then some way to have it output the video to my screen, but also to properly pass the surround sound info that came to the PC from the Wii U over the HDMI cable along to the headphones in a way where it's actually surround.
With my living setup, I need to use headphones. I can put some money into this, but I want to know it's going to work, and an ideal situation would also have surround work with any other HDMI source like other consoles.
Also: I've been playing original Wii games on the Wii U, and I know those use Pro Logic II. I figure any solution would compensate for that, but still.
So, basically, does anyone know of some kind of box I can hook the Wii U up to that'll take its HDMI in and feed proper surround out to a pair of headphones I can plug into that box? That box could potentially be my PC.
I've looked at the Wii U Surround Guide at https://www.neogaf.com/threads/wii-u-surround-sound-guide-and-faq.500865/ and it's handy but it never involves headphones in the setup, just Wii U -> AV Receiver of some kind -> physical surround sound speaker setup.
Thanks!
