Wii u won't connect to other players online. Need help please.

So just as the title says, my Wii u won't connect to players when playing online games. I can do certain internet activites like going to the eshop, even downloading titles, using the web browser but for some reason I can't connect to others. I'm not able to play smash bros, mario kart 8, and sadly splatoon online. I need help guys, i'm not too familiar with technology but if someone will be able to guide me through a solution that would be awesome!
