I'm awful at Mario Kart Wii and I can't figure out why

I've done well playing Mario Kart against the computer. But whenever I play MK Wii online, I'm always last or second to last. I use manual. I drift. I'm able to make it through without falling off the track most of the time, but it always looks like everyone is just going way faster than me.
Is there a secret to it? Am I just bad at it? Do people have strategies to go fast and stay in the lead?
Do most people use the steering wheel? The wii remote? Classic controller?
What's the best vehicle to use?
