Why are my speeds fluctuation so much on my desktop?

They are going from 1.3mpbs to 40kpbs to 1.2mpbs back down to zero. Why are they not stable? I am using a wifi extender to my modem and historically I have not had too much trouble with intermittent connection. Iām at a loss, the Xfinity assistant was no help.
