EDIT: Solved! HUGE thanks to u/Traditional_Bit7262 - I renamed the SSID for the 5GHz connection different from the 2.4GHz connection, disconnect and forget, then restarted my PC and modem. Sure enough, the renamed network popped up, and I was able to connect to it no issue, and it's now showing 5GHz band!
Hello!
I've been having issues with having stable internet on my PC and have been trying to troubleshoot with no success.
I would really appreciate some guidance and what needs to be done to get my PC to not drop connection randomly.
My PC:
-Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8600K CPU @ 3.60GHz
-ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WIFI-AC) LGA1151 (Intel 8th Gen) DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 Z370 ATX Gaming Motherboard with onboard 802.11ac WiFi, Gigabit LAN and USB 3.1 [I don't know mother board is relevant, but just in case]
*GIGABYTE WiFi 6E GC-WBAX210 (2x2 802.11ax/Tri-Band WiFi/Bluetooth 5.2/PCIe Expansion Card)
My Modem:
-AT&T
-Arris BGW210-700
-Software Version 4.26.11
I built my PC back in 2018 and I've not had any issues until the last year or two with my connection getting a little spotty. I had it connected through an ethernet cable for a very long time, and then had to switch to WiFi after some life happened.
It eventually got to the point where the PC just wouldn't connect to WiFi and needed an adapter. My dad had an old Linksys USB WiFi adapter which SORT OF worked, until I could afford to buy a WiFi card. It was pretty solid until my most recent move.
I'm using AT&T for an ISP, and I just confirmed that it supports BOTH 2.4GHz and 5GHz, but NOT 6GHz. I have downloaded WiFi adapter drivers from Intel and from Gigabyte's website, I have configured the Gigabyte card through device manager:
Property: 802.11a/b/g Wireless Mode
Value: 5. Dual Band 802.11a/g
Property: 802.11n/ac/ax Wireless Mode
Value: 4. 802.11ax [I have also tried 802.11ac]
Property: Preferred Band
Value: 5. Prefer 5GHz 6GHz band
Property: Ultra High Band (6GHz)
Value: Enabled
Restarting after each change in configuration.
In my Network Connections, I can see Wi-Fi using Realtek 8822BE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC, and Wi-Fi 4 using Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX210 160MHz.
Then when selecting a network to connect to off of the task bar, there's a drop down from the top that has two options - Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 4 - and my modem appears on both the lists that those two options give.
Looking deeper in the Windows setting, both options show 2.4GHz bands.
I have also looked into my modem's settings and I can clearly see where 2.4GHz and 5GHz are both enabled.
I'm at a loss as to what I need to do to stabilize my connection. Even as I type, I'm getting a server error on Reddit because I think my connection keeps going in and out. At this point, I just need an answer (besides get a new PC) on what the weak link is. Whether it's replacing parts, configuring my modem, installing software - just SOMETHING.
Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated. Hopefully the information I've thought to include will help, but if there's anything more that might help, I am more than happy to supply it.
