Wifi antenna

I've heard this is divisive, but its best option for me...picking up wifi from house to workshop about 50 yard away. I have an antenna to modem, and modem to router. Is this right? Having a hard time getting answers of how to do this setup. It's a metal building so an outdoor antenna is best option as signal can't penetrate the walls hardly at all. How do I pick what wifi signal to pick up? I'm currently waiting on coax adapter as the antenna coax is smaller than normal coax...
