Discussions about Weather
Post Body
A few people asked about Weather support, so I'll bring it up for discussion.
The challenge with weather is that weather APIs aren't free. The most cost-effective one I found is OpenWeatherMap.
Some quick math:
- I have widgets update 4 times an hour, so 96 times a day or 2880 a month
- That's 2,880 API calls per user who has a weather widget.
- In the free tier, that's 347 users per month.
- In the $40 tier, that's 3472 users per month.
- In the $180 tier, that's 34722 users per month.
While the costs are minimal per user, they do add up!
I do plan to sell this app for $1.99 US when it launches, but assuming it is successful and you use it for years, I'd end up losing money over the long term!
For those that would like weather support, would you be open to paying $1 per year to enable it (it would of course be opt-in). Yes, I'd make a slight profit on that figure, but it's the minimum price you can charge.
