how to tell if blade is defective?

Second time using a Wilkinson sword blade, same blade. First time my face was fine and second time same result. However the first time it ate up my neck but the second time it did it less but still nicked me a few times. Gonna be trying out a bunch of different blades in this sample pack but I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me screwing up my technique. I'm going to do a third shot tomorrow with a new fresh blade just to MAKE SURE.
But just in case. What are signs of a defective blade?
