I offered to test this soap for /u/goodthingstolife and give him some feedback as well this review
Lather Pictures hopefully i will be able to add more soon.
Nature of soap: Soft soap which is easy to press in to any container. I used a small Japanese tea bowl as i was going to be using it a lot in the next week or so.
Scent: Unscented. It smell neutral but pleasent. It is definitely worth keeping an unscented product on hand and I would look at buying some of the finished unscented product. I am always considered than unscented would be a waste but the smell of this soap has forced me to reconsider. I assume the scent comes from the oils used.
Ease of Lathering: Due to the soap being particularly soft it was very easy to load. I used a "dry" brush method as well and "damp" and "soaking wet". All methods produced excellent lather fairly quickly and without too much work. "Damp" was faster due to the higher initial water content. However a "soaking wet" had too much water for my liking, it isn't a method i use for any soap i have currently. To use up the high content of water too much product must be loaded for the amount of lather i require.
Slickness: It was nice and slick but not extremely so. Compared to my glycerine pre shave soap (which i wouldnt shave with) it was clearly less slick but not in a particularly adverse way. More slick than proraso and slightly less slick then Nanny's Silly Soap which is closer to a stiff cream than soft soap.
Cushion: About the best cushion i have had so far. Lovely and thick without causing any issue with blade contact with the skin. The razor need rinsed fairly frequently as a result.
Dissipation of lather: I left the lather on the brush for 15 minutes. There was hardly any visible dissipation and the lather was as slick and cushioned when rubbed between my fingers.
Value for money: An important criteria, if it was available in the UK for £6.50 plus shipping then i would consider that really good value, more could easily be justified due to a lack of good UK artisan shaving soaps. The current retail is roughly $10 per 100g puck but shipping to the UK is simply expensive.
Overall I think this is a great artisan offering and i look forward to trying more soaps by him.
Feel free to ask for more details on anything here and for details on anything I have missed.
