Yesterday my town, Ellicott City, experienced a horrendous flood that wiped out a large portion of our little city. Having lost everything in a flood here two years prior, I was a bit antsy as the rain began to come down harder and the river waters behind my home rose ever so slightly. I poured myself a glass of the title whisky and stood on my porch watching bedlam around me. As the sidewalk beside my home buckled and slid into the river I delighted in the sweet yet salty smoke of the whisky's nose. While a Jeep washed down the road in front of my eyes i found my tongue met with an initial explosion of caramel and vanilla. When the water crested over my deck toward the front door a few rain drops fell into my glass. The hydration of impending doom opened up the palate to expose a divine smokiness and a touch of lemon. Indeed, as the emergency evacuation services dragged me over the roofs to safety I could still taste the warm peat throughout my mouth. So here's to you Bruichladdich. Thank you for the liquid courage to stay calm, cool, and collected through this ordeal. When, if ever, I am allowed to return to my home I eagerly await finishing the half glass sitting on my table.
