When I started drinking whiskey I went straight for drams like STAGG, JDSBBP, ECBP, Blantons SFTB. These are whiskies that punch well into the 120 proof territory. I have quite a few even in the 130 proof range. I have a coy hill that I think is over 140.
But over time as my collection has grown I really enjoy the flavorful lower proof whiskies the most. It doesnt kill my throat, get me plastered immediately. I can smell the whiskey and less of the alcohol vapor. And its just smoother and more enjoyable.
Some of my favorites now are Yellow Spot, Redbreast 12 year (not CS), Blantons regular and gold, Elijah Craig Toasted, E.H. Taylor small batch. These are all 90-100 proof.
It doesnt escape me that you can add water. But I like just pouring my whiskey and walking away with it instead of going into chemist mode. Also drinking it in a consistent way.
Not much to say here just a thought and curious if others backed down on the proof over time.
Cheers
Cancer? This is another reason I've dialed it back. When you wake up with a sore throat theres no way thats good.
Yes the Redbreast 12 Im drinking now is at 80 and its fantastic. I have the CS version and I passed tonight. Yellow Spot is maybe 92 proof, that might be up your ally. Probably the best Irish I have if you're into Irish.
I’m all over the spots right now, especially Yellow Spot. Easiest drinking whisky out there and a change up from rich bourbon.
No idea why you’re getting downvoted this makes perfect sense. If you like a large cube in your whiskey then high proof can make sense. If you want value bottles that are high proof I think it’s hard to beat ECBP and JDSBBP. If you can go down a bit then Old Forrester 1920 is great as well. JD also just release a new coy hill if you can find it but I think it will sell out fast.
For sure. The body is not meant to ingest jet fuel on a daily basis. I’ve dialed it back big time both in terms of proof and drinking frequency.
Agreed. Trying to get away with enjoying whiskey and not doing damage over the long term.

It’s a good observation. An easy way to ramp up flavor is to just increase the proof. Much harder to get a flavor bomb whiskey at a lower proof because that takes time.
