Commuting in winter?

Hello, unfortunately I was in a car accident and my car is totaled. While I wait for insurance I’m thinking of biking. My job is only 1 mile from my apartment, my school is 3. However I live in New England and it gets dark around 4:30 and it’s going to be icy/snow this winter as usual. I’m concerned about safety given these factors, does anyone commute this way? Could I have any advice on choosing a bike taking this into account? Thanks for any help
