Giant ATX for mostly commute and some offroad biking - for $530 vs Trek bike at local retailer for $400?

Hi all, I am completely new to adult bikes, haven't ridden one in years. I am doing a summer internship at a fairly remote city with no public transit, hence am looking for a good beginner bike to last at least a few years. My commutes will be around an hour every day for work, and gym/groceries occasionally. Is the Giant ATX brand new at $530 worth it? I haven't had much success with reaching out to sellers on marketplace, so I'd rather get either new or pre owned from a store. Or should I get a used Trek (I dont quite remember which model) for $400? Thanks!
