Looking for input on Surly Karate Monkey vs Jones SWB vs Kona Unit X
Post Body

I'd really appreciate any input on which way to go here. Looking to move away from my 53 cm Surly Steamroller to a geared, rigid MTB with alt bars that I can use as an all arounder - flat, gravel, bikepacking, single and doubletrack. I know - if you’re looking for something to be all things you’re bound to be disappointed, but I’m gonna try regardless. I have it narrowed down to the Surly Karate Monkey, Jones SWB, and the Kona Unit X. None of the LBS in my area carry any of these models in store, which sucks, so I’d likely be buying without test riding. I’m between sizes on some of these models too, so sizing help would be great. Thanks!

  • What's your price range, and have you considered second hand? Up to $2000
  • What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc? *Fun and getting fit *
  • How far will you be riding, and how often? daily, with longer weekend rides, anywhere between 10-20 miles.
  • Riding conditions: road, trails, single-track, off-road. Flat or hilly? Mixed. Traffic and weather: No real traffic and year round.
  • Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too. Southern Maine
